The Ongoing Debate
A debate is now raging about the role of scientific journals (or more accurately, publishing houses that charge exorbitant prices to access to scientific journals). Many scientific institutions feel forced to spend valuable grant money on journals, money they’d rather spend on scientific research.
Although there are some “open access publishing” movements afoot, the situation has not yet resolved itself, mainly because many scientific authors feel compelled – for reasons of international recognition, tenure, etc. – to publish their findings in well-regarded private journals.
Regardless, a scholar’s list of her publications is often used as her pedigree, enabling other scholars to quickly view the nature and possible impact of their work. Below you’ll find a list of my publications.
Citations vs. Publications
Now that it is much easier to gather statistics about how scientific articles have been cited by other articles, often the number of citations for an article is viewed with a similar importance as other attributes of an article, such as the journal or co-authors.
For what it’s worth, in my own case I have observed an approximate two-year time lag between when my publications appear, and when they are most heavily cited. I am not sure what that means.
